Modals verbs in the past

Modals expressing probability all form their past in the same way.

Verb + Perfect Infinitive

She will have arrived.
It must have arrived.
They may have arrived.

2- Modals expressing other meanings can have different forms in the past.

We must stop to get petrol.
( present obligation)
We had to stop to get petrol.
( Past obligation)
